Tet 2011 – The Christmas of the East

The city is a buzz with lights, shopping and smiling faces. As Asia winds down for the 7 day break period, bank are already closed and so is the post office. Most international associations work uptill the Tet holiday on the 3rd, but many traditional establishments are already closed.
IF you ever come to Vietnam for Tet is important to understand how special this holiday is and how your business associates will expect you to act. You will be invited to all kinds of parties and celebrations, when you go to these you are expected to have little red envelops of money for the children and friends to pass on good-luck. Lucky Money is very common during the Tet season and children are as gitty as many western children are on Christmas morning.
Even though the east is regularly recognizing the Christmas holiday, it’s nothing like Tet. Huge money goes into gifts, parties and decorations. When you come during this time prepare to participate and roll with the flow. P.s. There are some very special foods during this time, so of my favorites are the pork and eggs and head cheese.

The intellectual property is significantly better then china, but could still use some improvement. IN Ha Noi – A swift deal has been made to sell nearly 15% of the Vietinbank to Canadian owned Bank of Nova Scotia. Expected to close in the 3rd quarter due diligence has begun and purchasing proceedings are in motion.

In conjunction with the BNS the International Finance Coporation will contribute 182 Million for a 10% share. These to global investors will being strength and creditability to the new growth phase of vietnam. Vietinbank is looking to expand in the small to medium growth buisness and with new international brands and domestic start ups occurring everyday Vietinbank has positioned themselves perfectly with international credibility.

Vietninbank is the third largest bank in Vietnam and we will see in the near future a solid foundation of leadership for small and medium enterprise lending from them.

When I wrote all that, the Vietnam Stock Index, which includes all of the companies listed on the Ho Chi Minh stock exchange, was at about 555. Today, it’s at 1,027! That’s an 85% gain in nine months!

That’s like the Dow moving from its April 2006 level of 11,100 to 20,535. Take a look at my chart and you can see just how big the move has been!
